Episode 1: Immigration in SE Portland

In our first episode, Lilly, Jose, and Savannah sit down with Jean Primas, a coordinator for REAP about how the immigrant story is a part of what makes Portland unique. They discuss topics such as what draws immigrants to this city, the sanctuary city designation, and how taking control in telling one’s own story can empower the people of a community. Alyssa was the Art director choosing the music and drawing the cover art by hand. Brian assisted with the writing of the script. Savannah also served as the executive producer for the project. They hoped to show that immigrants and the rich cultural experiences they bring to our communities make our city and our country a better place for all.

Episode 2: Life at the Kilt

Life at the Kilt seeks to tell the story of our top-of-the-line on-campus eatery, the Kilt. Run by Mrs. Dottie Miller and her food science students, they provide high-quality and healthy meals to students and staff on a weekly basis. In preparation for their podcast, our hosts Thomas and Daniel T. interviewed Mrs. Miller herself, a group of students in the class, and were joined in the booth by Anthony, another student who works and prepares food in the Kilt currently. Daniel A. served as the Art Director, creating the cover art by hand as well as assisting in creating the class cover art, “The Together We Rise” Mural. Nahn was the Executive Producer and handled all of the audio editing on the project. Nahn, along with the hosts, all helped to craft the script of this episode. They chose the Kilt because they felt it was a staple in the David Douglas Community that deserved to have it’s story told.

Episode 3: Views From the Numbers

Views From the Numbers seeks to look back in time at the Crash of 2008 and the ensuing economic recession that plagued America in its aftermath. Specifically they sought to understand and show how the recession hurt our community in East Portland and how, to this day, we still have not fully recovered. Kevin and Anthony did an excellent job interviewing two administrators, John Bier and Linda Vancil, as well as a classroom teacher and coach, Josh Dill. All three faculty were present during this time in DDHS history. Kevin and Anthony served as the hosts of the podcasts, as well as the investigative reporters conducting the interviews. Omar was the Executive Producer who did all the editing and was behind the scenes during the recording process. Nicole and Brandon were the writers of the program and Jaylo was the Art Director.

Episode 4: The Story of Dee’s Corner

In our fourth episode, our hosts Ezana and Geo sit down with the manager of the student-run cafe Dee’s Corner, Mr. Cole Samuel. Daniela served as the Executive Producer on the project and did all the audio editing herself. Cam and Nikolay crafted the script and interview questions. Sami was the Art Director and created the cover art with her own original photography and editing. the students chose Dee’s Corner to tell the story behind how it all began, what students learn by working there, and the name change last year in memory of the beloved teacher Denise Lisac.

Episode 5: Music in Decades

Music in Decades is an episode based around the art scene in Portland. Specifically, they wanted to look at how diversity provides value in The Arts. In preparation for their podcast, Codey interviewed a local band at a venue to discuss what music means to them and others. Music featured on the podcast were from local bands. He and his co-host Joey led the podcast. Jenny was the Executive Producer for the program. Angela was the Art Director. They sought to explore how music can enhance our lives and why people choose to make and perform music.

Episode 6: The Clout Crew Discusses Feminism

The Clout Crew is a group of young men that sought to expand their understanding of the term Feminism and how this term is being used increasingly in mainstream media. They sat down with fellow-student Daniela Baltag to discuss these concepts. Rocky and Mike did the hosting of the episode. Rocky also doubled as the Executive producer for the project. David and LJ wrote the script and prepared excellent interview questions. Finally, John was the creator of the cover art. John opted to use a graphic design site and free-to-use photograph. They chose this topic because they feel it is being mentioned more and more in the news and social media, yet there seemed to be a lot of disagreement on how people felt about it. They sought to define what exactly feminism is, what the goals of some feminist movements are, and why some feel this can be a controversial term.

Episode 7: Diligent Minds

Our hosts Kalee and Naatoli went in search of what it takes to build a successful business in Portland. Specifically, they were looking at how people can get their start in the restaurant industry. They sat down with Chris and Ulysses, the owners of the newly opened restaurant “La Tia Juana” to discuss how they got their start. Yaritza and Adelelma were the writers of the project. Ramazan created the original cover art using a graphic design logo-creator. Ivan was the Executive Producer. Diligent Minds sought to tell the story of an up-and-coming business while discussing what it takes in the business world. They felt businesses like this are the heart and soul of the Numbers. People like Chris and Ulysses are trying to better themselves, their families, and their communities.

Episode 8: Douglas Inside and Out

Douglas Inside and Out took an investigative look at our High School’s off-campus lunch policy. They did quite a bit of research to see how long it has been since we last had off-campus lunch allowed. Kaylee and Faith were the hosts, while also sharing the responsibility of editing the audio. They met with Vice Principal Joe Talley to see how the administration felt regarding the issue. Farhiya was the primary writer of the podcast. Chase was the Art Director, choosing the music and creating the cover art using a graphic design site. They chose this topic because every year students wonder why they still are not given the freedom to get lunch off campus.

Episode 9: Next Gen: The Rent Increase in East Portland

Roberto and Perla are the hosts on the 9th episode of our series. They take a close look to uncover the facts behind the rapidly gentrifying East Portland. They discuss the forces at play that are forcing people out of their homes due to the rent increases experienced by Portland Residents. Roberto and Perla interviewed Laura from the Portland Parks and Recreation Department. Shey was the Art Director and did the cover art by hand. Vitalina served as the Executive Producer, dedicated hours of her free time to come in and complete the editing required. Maddy and Jonathan were the writers for the Project.

Episode 10: Homelessness in Portland

Our final episode in the Stories From the Numbers podcast series takes a critical look at the homeless epidemic affecting Portland. Kaylee and Blake are the hosts of the show. Kaylee served triple-duty as one of the groups writers and as the Executive producer. Tiana was a co-writer on the project and Jonathan served as the Art Director. They felt that homelessness was something that was heavily affecting our city, and has grown in the amount of people experiencing homelessness in our city. Blake was able to interview our school’s resource officer Steve Morinville to get his take on the issue. They also discussed how homelessness has also been affecting students within our own community.
